Currently, more than a million parents across the world have made the decision to privately bank their baby’s umbilical cord blood and tissue

What is Cord Tissue?

The term ‘cord tissue’ refers to the body of the umbilical cord. During pregnancy, the umbilical cord is the conduit for everything your growing baby needs to develop, and after birth it can continue to offer them health and longevity. Unlike cord blood banking, which extracts blood through the umbilical vein, cord tissue banking involves the collection and preservation of the umbilical cord muscle, lining and Wharton’s jelly (the gelatinous substance within the umbilical cord). These are all rich stores of stem cells that are different to those collected from the cord blood.18 The stem cells extracted from the tissue are more numerous and, remarkably, more powerful than those found in the cord blood, potentially offering your child and family life-saving treatments to chronic or degenerative diseases encountered later in life.

The benefits of cord tissue banking lie in the preservation of a priceless resource for your child’s future. Cord tissue stem cells are leading the way in current medical research into a host of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. In order to maximise the potential effectiveness of your child’s banked stem cells, LifeCells preserve samples extracted from both the newborn cord tissue and blood; by ensuring that both blood and tissue are processed, we will preserve the greatest density and diversity of healthy stem cells for future medical treatments.
