Preserving your child's Stem Cells

Almost immediately following your baby’s birth, their umbilical cord blood and tissue is under the protection of LifeCell’s robust processing protocols and state-of-the-art cryogenic preservation systems. Shortly after the stem cells have been isolated and extracted at our Discovery Park laboratories, you will receive your baby’s stem cell count. Quality control checks are carried out and the stem cells are divided and stored in multiple vials to ensure accessibility and security. These vials will be cryogenically preserved in specialist liquid nitrogen freezers. The freezing process is precisely controlled by specialist software that manages the temperature decrease in minute detail, as the cells are very sensitive and fragile. Once completely frozen, the cells remain at a constantly maintained and monitored temperature. Thanks to our world-leading lab systems, expert processes and robust protocols, we’re confident stating that our service is as the forefront of the industry.

 

How long can I store my baby's Stem Cells?

Once frozen, stem cells can be stored for many years. Given that the science of stem cells is still a relatively young field, current research into cryopreservation suggests that samples remain viable for a minimum of 25 years (1). Studies are planned to assess the viability of stem cells at the 30-year mark, but currently there is no reason to suggest that correctly processed and stored cells will deteriorate over this time. At LifeCells we have ensured that both our processes and facilities ensure the long-term viability of your baby’s stem cells.

Because we know how important the lifetime health of your child is, their stem cells will be preserved in multiple portions, ensuring that they can be utilised for multiple treatments at different points over the course of their lifetime. This is a vital part of our process, as once a sample has been thawed it is not viable to be refrozen; that is why we are one of only a few stem cell banks that preserve your baby’s cells in multiple portions that can be thawed and used at multiple instances.

 

Secure Stem Cell storage

The decision to preserve your baby’s stem cells is a potentially life-altering one, and at LifeCells we know how vitally important it is to ensure the fruits of that decision are preserved securely. Following their extraction and isolation in the lab, the multiple samples of stem cells are stored in specially designed Liquid Nitrogen Freezers. To ensure they are secure and undisturbed, these freezers are located in our top security facilities in the Discovery Park. Access to our freezers is limited to senior LifeCells lab personnel only, and is strictly monitored. Our freezers are backed up by banks of generators, secured by top level fire & flood security and alarm systems, with CCTV and security personnel monitoring the facilities 24/7.

This all means that your cells are completely secure in our facilities. What is more, your samples will be split across multiple, independently-powered freezers, ensuring that a majority of samples will be protected against any instance of mechanical failure or human error, no matter how unlikely these might be.
