What are Umbilical Stem Cells?

Stem cells are basic human cells that have the remarkable ability to develop into any other human cell, giving them powerful healing potential. They have the ability to heal and restore other damaged cells, or replace them entirely. For this reason, stem cells play a central role in an array of pre-existing medical therapies for more than 85 conditions, and are at the heart of research into regenerative medicine.

There are many types of stem cells and many sources of them in the human body, but many of these are difficult or dangerous to access. However, in recent years, umbilical cord blood and cord tissue has been shown to be a plentiful, non-controversial source of newborn stem cells. By cryogenically freezing your newborn’s stem cells with LifeCells, you will be preserving them while they are young and pristine, so your family can access them in the future for medical therapies.

Umbilical Cord Blood and Stem Cells

The blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth is abundant with blood-forming stem cells, called haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). There are a number of different types of stem cells present in different parts of body, and these tend to develop at different points in our life cycle when they are most needed by the body. However, all stem cells share the ability to self-renew (make copies of themselves) and differentiate (develop into more specialized cells), beyond this stem cell varieties vary widely. HSCs are commonly known as ‘unspecialised’ cells, meaning they can transform into a range of different cell types. Being so highly versatile means they can rebuild an individual’s immune system, replace any diseased or damaged parts of the blood, or develop into any type of cell required in the blood. Because of this ability, HCSs are exceptional sources of treatment for cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma, or for diseases of the blood and immune system, with stem cell transplants being one of the most common and effective stem cell treatments currently used. To date, more than 45,000 transplants have been undertaken worldwide, and, with over 80 conditions already known to be treatable with HSCs and thousands of clinical trials currently active to find more, their treatment potential is immeasurable.26,28

Why Bank your Child’s Stem Cells?

You have an amazing opportunity right at the start of your child’s life to preserve a resource that could ensure their health and longevity throughout their life. Despite their amazing healing potential, stem cell-rich umbilical cord blood and tissue are routinely discarded after birth, but by contacting LifeCells you can see that you don’t make this same mistake.

There are over a million parents across the world who have placed their child’s umbilical cord stem cells into private storage, with each one of those parents choosing to bank their child’s stem cells for different reasons. Here are some common reasons parents choose to bank their umbilical cord stem cells.

100 percent ICON

A Perfect Match When it comes to the public bank there is no guarantee of finding a perfect stem cell match. Umbilical cord stem cell banking guarantees a 100% match to your baby, a 25-75% match for siblings and around a 10% match for parents.

First Aid Kit ICON

Family Sickness Umbilical cord stem cells are used today as standard therapy for more than 85 conditions, including cancers, arthritis and skeletal conditions, diabetes, heart disease, cerebral palsy and inflammation disorders. Having a perfectly matched, and easily accessible source of stem cells could prove an invaluable resource for your baby and family throughout their lifetime.

Clock ICON

Immediate Availability Should the need for stem cell therapy arise, stored stem cells can be accessed immediately with no additional costs. If relying on a public bank to find a match it can take weeks or even months, if at all, and the cost to access each sample is normally upward of £20,000.

Adoption

Adoption or Donor Ovum/Sperm Following adoption or the use of donor ovum/sperm, it isn't always possible to have access to a biologically related family member. Stem cell banking is a unique opportunity to save these cells in order to guarantee a 100% match, should therapy ever be required.
