Ethnic Minorities

For a stem cell transplant, the donor needs to be a genetic match for the patient; usually that means they’ll need to come from the same ethnic background. There is currently a high discrepancy in the ethnic mix of the donor register, meaning that if you’re from a black, Asian or minority ethnic background you could have less than a 20% chance of finding the best possible match for a transplant. For Asian patients in Britain, this chance drops to just 6% (33). Private stem cell banking eliminates this problem entirely, and guarantees a source of genetically matched stem cells for your baby and a viable source for other family members as well.

Public Banks and Ethnic Minorities

In terms of how they process and store the stem cells, public banks work just like private ones, however, the terms of access are very different. Whereas with a private bank only you and your family have access to the stored cells, in public banks the baby’s cord blood is stored for use by anyone who may need it for a transplant. All samples are stored anonymously on an international register and thus can not be reserved for specific families or individuals. This means that, if you or your family require stem cell-based treatments in the future and are reliant on a public bank, you will be placed on the register to wait for a matching donor, a process that can take significant time, and sometimes no match is ever forthcoming. This time-consuming and nerve-wracking process is even more complicated for patients from an ethnic minority.
